Anode Active Material
The anode in lithium-ion batteries typically consists of graphite, applied as a coating on copper foil. Graphite exhibits excellent electronic conductivity and unique ability to reversibly intercalate lithium-ions between its layers which makes it suitable for serving as a preferred active material for the anode. This electrochemical capability remains stable over thousands of cycles, especially with optimized battery electrodes. However, a crucial requirement for this application is that the graphite surface must be compatible with the chemistry of lithium-ion batteries, including solvents and binders. This compatibility is vital to ensure the longevity and efficient functioning of the battery over its lifecycle.
